Gas Cooker
A freestanding cooker includes the oven, grill and hob combined and is usually fitted into a space between kitchen units.
Most cookers have one oven, one grill and four burners. Some freestanding cookers come with eye level grills, some have ovens and grill together fitted in one. Heat can be directed either from the top or the bottom of the oven / grill. Newer models will have heat directed from both top and bottom, which creates more even cooking.
Gas provides instant heat, is easy to control and also provides moist heat to the oven which helps prevent food drying out. However, heat is unevenly distributed, but this can be improved by choosing a fan assisted model. Calor Gas bottles can be used where no gas connection is present in your home or for emergency situations. LPG (liquid petrolium gas) is a more environmentally friendly gas option.
CLEANING
Stay-clean liners
These are detachable metal liners in the sides, and sometimes the back, of the oven which can be lifted out for cleaning. This type of liner is now only seen on budget-priced ovens. Most manufacturers opt for catalytic liners.
Catalytic liners
These liners are treated with a special material that absorbs grease splashes. When the oven is run at around 200°C or higher, the splashes are burnt off.
SAFETY
Some cookers have multiple glazing so that the outside pane stays cool even when the oven is turned up full, which helps prevent burning. Child safety locks are also available on some models.
